Is Switching Easy?

Switching to Birmingham Telecom is extremely simple. Simply check your existing contract, pick your preferred package and switch. From that point on, we’ll take care of the rest.

Can I Order SOGEA without Line Rental?

Yes. We appreciate that not all phone and broadband contracts run in sync, and that’s why we’ve made all our broadband products available without line rental. So if your broadband contract is up but your phone contract isn’t, you can still make the switch to Birmingham Telecom.

If you prefer however, we can take over your current line from your existing provider at the same time without any downtime or hassle.

What does "No Bandwidth Restriction" Mean?

It means exactly what it says. When you take your broadband with Birmingham Telecom, you can download and upload as much data as you require and we will never switch you off, slow you down or charge you any extra for the privilege.

Unlike most other providers, Birmingham Telecom don’t have a fair usage policy or enforce traffic management, and that means you’re free to enjoy the internet as it was intended.

What is a Static IP Address and Why do I Need One?

An IP address is the number used to identify the location of your computer on the internet. This enables it to communicate with other computers and websites alike.

Birmingham Telecom include a static IP address with all of our fibre connections as standard and at no cost. This means that your internet connection is always assigned the same IP address. It is a fixed, permanent address, a little like the phone number assigned to your business for example.

You will need a static IP address if you want to:

Use SIP or VoIP Technology
Run your own FTTP Server
Host your own Website
Use Remote Homeworkers from your Telephone System
Connect to your computer from anywhere in the world via remote access.
Ensure other computers can locate your computer anywhere across the internet.

If Switching, What Do I Need?

If you currently have broadband – you’ll need an active service to switch to Birmingham Telecom. If you cancel your broadband account with your current provider before the move to us is complete, this will delay the process.

If you currently have Virgin you need to keep this service active and use this until your broadband service is activated.

Once we’ve confirmed your service has been switched to us, check that your old provider has cancelled your service. This should stop any unnecessary billing problems occurring.

Will Our Speeds Go Up Over Time?

Fibre broadband uses Dynamic Line Management to give you the best possible service.

This means you will probably see your speed vary over the first 10 days as the broadband system runs tests to find the best combination of stability and speed for your service. This can cause your speeds to go up and down for a few days and may even temporarily disconnect you from our network a few times.

Once the fibre connection has settled down however, you will normally find the speeds remain very fast and consistent.

How Quickly Can You Connect Us?

Connection depends on what you choose and availability in your local area, but our minimum lead times are shown below:

Switch to fibre from another supplier – 10 days
Switch to fibre and your business phone line from another supplier – 10 days
Install new business phone line and broadband – 10 days

What internet speeds do I need for SIP Phone Lines?

SIP phone lines use very little bandwidth around 100kbps per call (both upload and download).

This means even a modest broadband connection can support multiple calls at once.

However, reliability and quality are more important than raw speed. A stable, low-latency broadband connection with prioritised voice traffic (QoS) will ensure clear, uninterrupted calls.

We recommend using our business-grade broadband or even a dedicated leased line connection for best performance.
