What Is the Difference Between FTTC and FTTP?

Choosing between FTTC and FTTP can make a big difference to your business performance. FTTC is widely available and cost-effective, but it still depends on copper lines which can limit speed and reliability.

FTTP is full fibre directly into your premises, offering stronger performance, lower latency and better long-term value for modern businesses using cloud services, VoIP and video calls. This guide explains the pros, cons and best use cases for each option.

If you run a business and are looking to upgrade your broadband, there are several options to choose from, including FTTC and FTTB business broadband. But what is the difference between FTTC and FTTP, and how do you know which type of broadband is right for your needs?

Birmingham Telecom bring you a guide to answer these questions. You’ll know what each acronym means, how they differ and which type will best suit your business.

What is FTTC?

FTTC stands for Fibre to the Cabinet, also known as part fibre broadband, where fibre optic cables run from a provider’s exchange to a street-side cabinet, and then from the cabinet to a home or business premises using existing copper phone lines.

There is also the option for a SoGEO (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access) connection, which is similar to FTTC but is a broadband-only service, where phone calls are made over the internet (VoIP).

What is FTTP?

FTTP stands for Fibre to the Premises, also known as full fibre broadband, and uses fibre optic cables to connect from the exchange to the cabinet, and then again from the cabinet to the premises. This is the fastest type of broadband available in the UK, ideal for multiple users and a reliable connection for data transfers, streaming, video calls, gaming and cloud-based applications.

FTTC and FTTP Comparison Table

Feature

FTTC

FTTP

Key Advantage
Widely available for homes and businesses UK-wide
Full fibre direct to the premises using fibre optics, providing faster and more reliable connections
Pros

Broad UK Coverage

Cheaper than FTTP

Simple installation

Adequate speeds

Significantly faster speeds

Stable, consistent performance

Lower latency, perfect for video calls

Future-proofed full fibre infrastructure

Cons

Speed is limited by the copper connection from the cabinet to the premises

Less reliable, more prone to interference

Lower upload speeds

Performance may drop at peak times or with multiple users

Not yet available for all businesses in the UK

Installation can be more complex

Higher cost for top-tier plans

Typical Use Case
Light to moderate usage for browsing, HD Streaming and basic home working
Suitable for heavy usage and businesses, and ideal for 4K streaming, large uploads and multiple devices
Future-Proofing
Limited – copper restricts long-term speed upgrades
Excellent – fibre supports much higher future speeds

Key Differences in Availability & Cost

Availability

Fibre to the cabinet broadband is the most widely available type of fibre broadband in the UK, and is also known as part fibre broadband, as the connection between the cabinet and your business premises uses older copper technology. This makes it accessible to the vast majority of properties, including many rural areas.

Fibre to the premises broadband, however, is still being rolled out gradually. While coverage is expanding quickly, with Openreach and the government’s Project Gigabit aiming for 99% availability by 2032, not every business can benefit from the technology just yet.

Fortunately, the rollout has already begun and over 85% of premises can make the switch to FTTP.

Cost Comparison

FTTC is often cheaper because it uses existing copper cabling for the final part of the connection, meaning installation is usually straightforward. That said, the copper section is also the reason FTTC performance can vary, especially during busy periods or in buildings further away from the cabinet. For businesses that rely on VoIP, cloud services and consistent connectivity throughout the day, those limitations can quickly become frustrating.

FTTP is generally the stronger option because it replaces the copper connection entirely with fibre, delivering a more stable service, faster speeds and better upload performance. While full fibre can sometimes cost slightly more, the gap has reduced significantly in recent years, and many FTTP packages are now priced very competitively. In most cases, the improvement in reliability, consistency and long-term scalability makes FTTP the smarter choice for business use, particularly if you want a connection that won’t need upgrading again in the near future.

If FTTP isn’t available at your premises yet, FTTC can still be used as a temporary step up, but full fibre is the upgrade most businesses should choose as soon as it becomes available.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose FTTC if:

Fibre to the cabinet continues to meet the needs of many small businesses, even without the higher speeds of full fibre.

Choose FTTP if:

FTTP is the better long-term choice for most businesses, because it removes the copper bottleneck and delivers far more consistent speeds and reliability.

Conclusion

What is the difference between FTTC and FTTP? It lies in FTTP broadband using fibre optics for the entire connection, from exchange to cabinet to premises, whereas FTTC still uses traditional copper lines from the cabinet to the premises. This means FTTP has faster speeds, better reliability and future-proofed technology, but comes at a slightly higher cost and requires changes to infrastructure.

For many homes and businesses, FTTC is perfectly adequate for day-to-day internet usage, but FTTP is often worth the upgrade and investment if faster speeds and reliance on uninterrupted connectivity are required.

FAQs

In most cases, yes. FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) delivers fibre all the way into the property, resulting in faster speeds, higher reliability and more consistent performance than FTTC, which still relies on copper cables for the final connection. However, fibre to the cabinet broadband is still perfectly suitable for light usage or smaller households and businesses.

You can check availability by using the postcode or address checker on our website. Just enter your postcode and select your address and you will be able to see FTTP availability.

Yes, FTTP and full fibre broadband mean the same thing. Both refer to a connection where fibre optic cables run directly from the exchange into your home or business, without using copper lines. Read our full guide on full fibre broadband here.

Generally, yes FTTP requires a fibre cable installed into the property and an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) also fitted inside. This will be a one-time installation and does not usually affect existing phone or broadband services unless you choose to migrate them, which we can do at Birmingham Telecom.

If FTTP is available at your address, upgrading is straightforward. With Birmingham Telecom, we provide full installation for free when you switch to one of our FTTP deals. It will require a scheduled installation where we install the fibre cables and ONT and then switch your service over once live.

FTTC suits small businesses with light to moderate usage and lower budgets. FTTP is better for businesses that rely on cloud services, video calls, large file transfers or multiple users and devices.

If your business can’t have FTTP broadband, there is also the option for a leased line, which is similar to FTTC but doesn’t require a phone line, and is a broadband-only service where calls are taken over the internet.
