Antivirus is no longer enough on its own.
Modern attacks do not always arrive as an obvious infected file. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) continuously monitors your systems to spot and stop suspicious behaviour before the damage is done.

46% of UK small businesses identified a cyber breach or attack in the last 12 months
Cybercriminals do not only target large organisations. Small businesses hold valuable customer, employee and financial information, but often do not have their own cyber security team.
The UK Government’s latest Cyber Security Breaches Survey found that 46% of small businesses had experienced a cyber breach or attack during the previous 12 months.

We help you put the right protection in place before there is a problem.
Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) is advanced protection that continuously watches what is happening across your computers. Instead of only looking for known viruses, it recognises suspicious behaviour and can immediately block a threat, stop malicious activity or isolate an affected device before the attack spreads.
Put simply, antivirus looks for known threats. EDR looks for the signs of an attack and takes action to stop it. It monitors how applications, processes and users are behaving. This allows it to spot the signs of an attack, even when the individual file or technique has not been seen before.
Depending on the protection selected, EDR can:
For example, if ransomware begins rapidly changing or encrypting files, EDR can recognise that behaviour, stop the process and isolate the affected computer. This could prevent one infected laptop from becoming a much larger business incident.
Traditional antivirus asks:
“Do we recognise this file as dangerous?”
EDR goes further and asks:
“What is happening on this computer, does it look like an attack and what can we do to stop it?”
This matters because a modern cyberattack can involve several actions that appear harmless when viewed separately. A document might be opened, a script could run, a legitimate Windows tool could be launched, and login details could be collected.
EDR connects these activities, identifies the suspicious pattern and can intervene before the attacker reaches your data or spreads further across your network.
Antivirus remains one part of endpoint security, but it does not provide the same level of visibility, investigation and response. That is why we believe EDR should now be the baseline for every business computer.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is included with Windows and provides a useful first layer of protection.
However, it should not be confused with Microsoft Defender for Business.
Defender for Business is a separate, business-grade security service. It adds Endpoint Detection and Response, automated investigation, threat remediation and other advanced security features.
If your business is only using the antivirus included with Windows, we can review your current setup and explain what additional protection may be needed.
All three provide serious cyber protection. The main difference is how widely the protection looks and who is responsible for investigating and responding.
EDR: the essential baseline
EDR protects your laptops, desktop computers and supported servers.
It combines preventative security with continuous monitoring. It can detect suspicious behaviour, block threats, stop malicious processes, quarantine files and isolate affected computers.
For most businesses, EDR should now be considered the minimum acceptable level of endpoint protection, not an optional extra.
XDR: a wider view of your security
XDR stands for Extended Detection and Response. It builds on EDR by bringing together information from more parts of your business.
Depending on the platform and services connected, this can include your computers, email, Microsoft 365 accounts, user identities and cloud services.
For example, XDR could connect a suspicious email, an unusual Microsoft 365 login and malicious activity on an employee’s laptop into one incident. This provides a clearer picture of what is happening and helps stop attacks that move between different systems.
Managed EDR: 24/7 protection backed by security experts
EDR technology can actively detect and stop threats, but someone still needs to investigate serious incidents and make sure the attacker has been completely removed.
For businesses wanting round-the-clock protection, we offer Huntress Managed EDR.
Huntress combines powerful endpoint protection with a 24/7, AI-assisted Security Operations Centre backed by human security analysts. Its team investigates genuine threats and can take action to isolate affected computers and help contain and remediate an attack.
This is particularly valuable if you:
We use trusted endpoint security technology from Acronis, Microsoft and Huntress, but we do not expect you to choose between different products without advice.
We will review your devices, Microsoft licences, current security and level of risk before recommending the right option.
That may be:
Our recommendation will be based on what your business genuinely needs, not simply on selling you a particular product.
The easiest way to understand the difference between antivirus and EDR is to see it working across your own business devices.
We can arrange a free 30-day Acronis EDR trial, help you deploy the protection and review the results with you. We will explain what has been detected, highlight any concerns and recommend the most appropriate level of ongoing protection.
Everything will be explained clearly, without complicated reports or unnecessary jargon.

EDR stands for Endpoint Detection and Response. It continuously watches activity across your computers, identifies suspicious behaviour and can take action to block or contain a threat before it spreads.
EDR includes or works alongside antivirus protection, depending on the chosen service. Antivirus helps block known malicious files, while EDR adds behavioural monitoring, investigation and active response to more advanced threats.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus provides useful basic protection, but it is not the same as Microsoft Defender for Business. Defender for Business adds EDR, automated investigation, threat response and other business-grade security features.
Yes. Small businesses face many of the same cyber threats as larger organisations but often do not have their own security team. EDR provides stronger protection without requiring specialist staff within your business.
The automated protection provided by EDR operates continuously. If you also want security experts investigating and responding to threats 24 hours a day, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays, we recommend Managed EDR.
EDR provides the technology to prevent, detect and respond to threats. Managed EDR adds a team of security experts who monitor alerts, investigate genuine incidents and take or recommend action when required.
No security product can guarantee complete protection. However, EDR significantly improves your ability to prevent attacks, detect suspicious activity and contain threats before they cause wider damage. It should form part of a broader security approach that includes secure email, backups, updates and staff awareness.
We will help install EDR on agreed business devices and allow it to monitor and protect them for 30 days. At the end of the trial, we will review the findings with you, explain any concerns clearly and recommend the most appropriate ongoing protection. There is no obligation to continue.
