The Gigabit Voucher Scheme is a new initiative introduced and funded by the U.K. government to achieve full-fibre connectivity in Britain. So far, the government has contributed £67 million in funding to help businesses and local communities upgrade their internet connection.
What are Gigabit Vouchers?
Gigabit vouchers are a type of government grant that can be used by small businesses and local communities to contribute to the cost of installing a gigabit capable internet connection.
Businesses can claim up to £2,500 against the cost of installing their new connection and residents can get vouchers worth up to £500 as part of a group project.
Why are the Government funding this?
The government have outlined a goal to have the whole country connected by high-speed fibre. The scheme has been introduced to stimulate adoption of high-speed connections by businesses and residents.
The U.K. currently has more than 95% coverage for superfast broadband with speeds of 24 megabits per second or higher. However, most superfast connections still depend on copper telephone wires, which are limited in the speeds they can support. To get the fastest and most reliable broadband, a full fibre connection is needed.
Benefits of Upgrading
A faster, more stable internet connection will benefit both businesses and residents of the area. Full fibre is also able to easily support VoIP/Hosted Telephony, cloud connectivity, remote working and more.
- Superfast internet speeds, with no performance reduction at peak times
- Easily support multiple users and devices
- HD Streaming
- Video calls and conferencing
- Fast data transfers and multimedia uploads and downloads
