Businesses relying on a strong internet connection for daily operations need a connection that’s fast, secure and scalable. Many still rely on standard broadband, which often comes with unreliable speeds that lead to downtime, and shared connections, which is a big compromise on security.
Organisations can overcome these challenges with a leased business line. If your company uses the cloud and handles sensitive data for example, this blog explains how a business leased line can help your business.
A leased business line is a dedicated, private and symmetrical internet connection for a business. The symmetrical part means that, unlike regular broadband, both the download and upload speeds of the leased line are identical, providing a much more stable performance. The line, or connection, is completely private to the business. Compared to traditional broadband, businesses will have an uncontented connection with guaranteed speeds.
So, how can a leased line help your business in ways a traditional business broadband can’t?
After weighing up the differences, you may realise that your business doesn’t need a dedicated leased business line and instead would be better off with standard full fibre business broadband (also known as an FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) business broadband). Luckily, we also offer this here at Birmingham Telecom.
We’ve laid out the benefits of a business leased line, including symmetrical upload and download speeds, an uncontended connection, stronger SLAs and scalability, but is it still the right type of internet connection to choose?
We highly recommend choosing a business leased line if:
It’s safe to say that something like a small café or a point-of-sale business offering WiFi would be better off with standard business broadband, whereas an organisation doing real-time transfers or uploading large videos or files will benefit far greater with a dedicated leased line.
Business leased lines are a private internet connection, which requires a slightly more complex and lengthy installation than FTTC. The average time to install a business leased line is roughly 60 days, but this can vary based on existing infrastructure to determine the most efficient route for connection.
Once a site survey is completed, the infrastructure setup takes place, which may involve installing new cabling, ducts or fibre routes between your site and the nearest network exchange. After this, engineers complete the physical connection to the network, linking your premises directly to your internet service provider’s core infrastructure.
Following connection, the system is tested and activated to confirm that speed, latency and reliability meet the agreed Service Level Agreement standards. Birmingham Telecom manages the entire process end-to-end, from planning and coordination through to activation and aims to have everything ready to go in around 60 days. Once live, we provide ongoing monitoring and maintenance to ensure a continuous performance.
But what about a wireless leased business line? Yes, wireless leased lines exist and generally follow the same setup as wired lines. However, wireless leased lines use radio transceivers and directional antennas on your building to create a strong, point-to-point connection to the network. A small internal unit is also fitted to connect the wireless equipment to your internal network or router.
As no groundworks or significant alterations to infrastructure is needed, installation for wireless leased lines is around 10 to 20 working days.
Langdale Care Homes implemented a brand-new cloud-based management system, which required an update to their infrastructure. They were also facing terrible WiFi connections in different areas of several care premises and had ageing analogue phone systems, but couldn’t install a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection due to the rural locations of their care homes.
Birmingham Telecom solved Langdale’s problems by installing leased business lines across offices, care wings and communal areas at every site and replacing their old phone systems with cloud-hosted 3CX systems. This provided fast, reliable WiFi across all sites, supported their new cloud-based systems and provided a modern phone system to better suit day-to-day needs.
