What is Fibre to the Premises?

FTTP from Birmingham Telecom is a super-fast fibre optic technology where the connection is fibre throughout, giving you incredible speeds of up to 330Mbps download and 50Mbps upload, whereas fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) is delivered to the premises using copper infrastructure and only has speeds of up to 76Mbps.

How does FTTP Work?

Fibre to the Premises is a fibre optic connection that’s terminated straight into an end-users premise.

Data traffic is then sent back to the local exchange through the cabinet where it’s connected directly to high-powered optics.

These high-power optics are what connects the FTTP to the national fibre optic backbone. This means you can now get an inexpensive, full fibre internet connection for less than ever before.

How fast is Fibre to the Premises?

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) can provide speeds ranging from 80Mbps right the way up to 1.8 Gbps for a full “on demand” product.

How long does FTTP take to install?

If your building is already “on net” then we can normally install FTTP within 10 working days.

If your building is “off net” and you require an “on demand” connection then there are a number of factors that can impact the time it takes to implement FTTP so while we indicate that it will take on average 40-50 working days, in reality this will depend on the outcome of any site surveys we conduct and whether any works are needed that will require the input of outside agencies, such as local councils or landlords.
FTTP suppliers typically operate their own networks and enable cabinets based on demand in the area.

Normally our availability checkers are very accurate and will provide us with the speeds and local availability within seconds.

The good news is that as we manage the provisioning process ourselves and your dedicated account manager along side our provisioning team will be able to keep you updated on the progress of the order makes its way through the process up until connection.

What equipment is needed?

With all our FTTP connections we provide a router which is delivered to you pre-configured out of the box for you or your IT team to connect to your network.

However, depending on what you intend to use your FTTP for (for example, VoIP) we may recommend that you upgrade to a more suitable device but in most instances this is not necessary.

What happens if we need to move premises part way through our contract?

Ideally you’d capture the likelihood of a premises move before placing your order as this will have an impact on the recommended carrier.

If a move is required part way through a contract, a charge may be applicable depending on how long there is left on the contract and the location of the new site. It’s best to speak to your account manager to find out how the land lies for your specific case.

How does FTTP help customers with the PSTN switch-off?

The PSTN switch off means traditional analogue phone lines are being replaced by digital services that run over the internet. FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) provides a full-fibre connection directly into the building, delivering faster and more reliable broadband.

This allows customers to move to VoIP and SIP phone systems, which use the internet instead of copper lines. With FTTP, voice calls, video meetings and data services all run smoothly on one resilient connection, ensuring businesses are fully prepared for the digital voice future.
